We Are MSC – Larry J. Gonzales Sr.
This week’s “We Are MSC” highlights Houston, Texas, native Larry J. Gonzales Sr., the operations chief aboard MSC’s fleet replenishment oiler USNS Joshua Humphreys (T-AO 188).
What is your current hometown?
My birthplace is Houston, Texas.
What is your current assignment?
Operations Chief
How long have you worked with MSC?
I have worked for MSC for five fun years.
What is your job aboard USNS Joshua Humphreys?
Daily, I contribute to the efficient operation of the vessel by assisting Shipmaster Captain Patrick T. Christian in monitoring and tracking significant events, both in port and at sea. This includes maintaining detailed records and providing timely reports. In addition to these administrative duties, I serve as a watchstander, ensuring the safety and security of the ship and crew.
Additionally, I represent the USNS Joshua Humphreys as the Public Affairs Officer, conducting tours for visitors and managing communications with external stakeholders. This includes maintaining positive relationships with various parties and disseminating relevant information. Finally, I actively participate in all Navy base conferences and meetings, contributing to strategic planning and collaboration. I strive to maintain the highest standards of professionalism and efficiency in all aspects of my role.
What do you enjoy most about working with MSC?
It is with sincere gratitude that I reflect on my continued employment with MSC. Having retired twice, I remain deeply appreciative of this opportunity to contribute to such a vital organization. The privilege of supporting the United States’ Navy Fleet, as a member of our collaborative team, is both rewarding and inspiring. My dedication to my role stems from a genuine passion for my work, and I approach each day with enthusiasm and a commitment to excellence. The fulfilling nature of this position makes it feel less like employment and more like a rewarding pursuit.
What has been your most favorite memory while working at MSC?
My most memorable moment was during the summer of 2023. While relaxing in the United Club at the San Francisco International Airport, I struck up a conversation with a couple embarking on an extensive journey. They were headed to London to board a cruise around the United Kingdom, a trip they mentioned cost approximately $8,000. This sparked a reflection on my own recent travels. I had just completed a four-month deployment with MSC, supporting NATO operations throughout Northern Europe – a voyage that was entirely complimentary. The contrast between their considerable investment and my own enriching, cost-free experience created a truly exhilarating and memorable moment.
