WE ARE MSC --
We Are MSC – DEMACH Paul Pega
This week’s “We Are MSC” highlights Camano Island, Washington native Trinity Hundley, Second Assistant Engineer aboard Pathfinder-class oceanographic survey ship USNS Henson (T-AGS 63).
How long have you worked with MSC?
This is my second trip on the Henson, so sailing time, about six months, but with MSC about a year. I’ve been a mariner for four years.
What is your job?
My main job is with the fuel systems on board: monitoring, transferring, bunkering fuel systems. I’m also involved in air system maintenance.
How did your career as a mariner start?
I was about to graduate high school, and I didn’t know what I wanted to do. I went to a maritime expo in Seattle, and I met one of the maritime recruiters for Great Lakes Maritime. I didn’t think I could be an engineer, but I went for it and it worked out. I got lucky.
What influences led to your career as a mariner?
I grew up in Camano Island, which is right on Puget Sound, Washington. So, I grew in and on the water for most of my childhood. As a non-Sailor, when I looked at cargo ships, I never thought about the people that worked on them until I met the recruiter for Great Lakes Maritime Academy and thought, "Oh yeah, you have a whole crew on board."
What appealed to me was the work flexibility. It gives you an opportunity to do a lot of things like travel and explore.
What has been your best experience while working at MSC?
At this point, it’s been in Korea. It’s cool to be able to get this huge culture shock and food shock during my off time. It’s been a great experience to be able to try different things like Korean barbeque, or an octopus salad at a fancy restaurant.
