We Are MSC: Assistant Third Engineer Gregory Saddler
This week’s “We Are MSC” highlights Portsmouth, Virginia, native Gregory Saddler, the Third Assistant Engineer aboard fleet replenishment oiler USNS Joshua Humphreys (T-AO 188).
How long have you worked with MSC?
Saddler: I’ve worked for MSC for sixteen years.
What is your job aboard USNS Joshua Humphreys?
Saddler: As a Third Assistant Engineer on the USNS Joshua Humphreys, my responsibilities can include a variety of tasks. First, I monitor machinery, respond to emergencies, participate in drills, and enter data into logs. Second, I perform routine maintenance and repairs and conduct machinery overhauls. Third, I manage the ship's lubricate oil supply and distribution systems–all of which involves testing lubricant samples and ensuring proper management of the associated systems.
What do you enjoy most about working with MSC?
Saddler: The collaborative spirit on board the USNS Joshua Humphreys is particularly enjoyable, and there is so much to enjoy about working with MSC. The sailing experience with Cargo Officer Joseph Redwood, spanning two decades, has forged a strong camaraderie that consistently strengthens teamwork. The crew demonstrates impressive professionalism and unity, always recognizing that the MSC mission extends beyond any single individual. The leadership of Captain Christian is also appreciated, who is not just a leader but genuinely cares about every crew member, making our work aboard the Joshua Humphreys truly exceptional. I have a strong love for challenges and a desire to learn. Visiting other countries and learning about different cultures is enjoyable. Being with MSC for more than a decade has broadened my perspective on life in a way difficult to find elsewhere.
What has been your favorite memory while working at MSC?
Saddler: I experienced a life-changing week, providing the profound satisfaction of helping others in the most dangerous situations and saving lives. The best memories of working with MSC stem from the journey itself, each role molding me into the man and Civil Service Mariner that I am today. Being a core member of a department fuels the drive to surpass expectations, both internal and external.
As an Assistant Third Engineer, how do you support the MSC mission?
Saddler: I support MSC’s mission by diligently completing work and fostering a positive attitude every day. I treat every crew member with respect, which is crucial, as high morale is essential for mission success. Also, I empower others by readily sharing knowledge, which benefits everyone.
