WE ARE MSC --
We Are MSC – Lee Byrd, Electronics Technician
This week’s “We Are MSC” highlights Milwaukee, Wisconsin native Lee Byrd, electronics technician, aboard fleet replenishment oiler ship USNS Rappahannock (T-AO 204).
What is your current hometown?
Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and I went to Waukesha Tech. I also went to Los Angeles Film School for music production.
What is your current assignment?
Fleet replenishment oiler ship USNS Rappahannock (T-AO 204).
How long have you worked with MSC?
This is my second time with MSC. The first time, I served seven years and this time just over five and a half years. I initially resigned because I went back to college and got my degree, then came back.
What is your job aboard USNS Rappahannock?
The main scope of my job is the automation: programmable logic controls, human machine interfacing, and networking. We monitor the network for communications between machinery and our programs. But it’s not just monitoring the systems, we also do repairs and maintenance, and occasional circuit replacements.
How did your career as a mariner start?
I served four years in the Navy working on gas turbine systems. I was on three guided missile destroyers. During UNREPS, I was always curious to know, who are these guys giving us fuel? I was always curious.
One day, we were in Jebel Ali, Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates, and we needed a part for one of our main engines. One of the MSC ships had the part, so they sent me to pick it up. I met a CIVMAR, who showed me around the engine room of ship and told me about MSC. At that time, I had roughly six months left in the Navy. They explained what they do, then I said, I’m in.
What has been your best experience while working at MSC?
I’ve met some pretty interesting people. We all come from different walks of life, and I’ve always been the type of person that if I befriend people, I like to make connections and build professional relationships. There is that element here. I also like to explore different cultures, get a feel for the life, and have stories to tell when I go home.
As a staff member how do you enhance readiness?
When it comes to the mission, there’s no room for error. Anytime, before we get underway, I like to stay vigilant; just make sure that I’m staying ahead and thinking ahead. Also, constant communication with the chief. It’s how to ensure I am ready for the mission.
