The event, hosted in partnership with Naval Medical Center San Diego and USNS Mercy leadership, offered attendees insight into the Navy’s forward-deployed medical capabilities and provided 1.5 in-person ACHE education credits. The mission of NMCSD is to provide a superior experience for our patients, staff, and warfighters. NMCSD employs more than 5,000 active-duty military personnel, civilians, and contractors in southern California to deliver exceptional care afloat and ashore.

This week’s Military Sealift Command “Ship in the Spotlight,” is the MSC chartered ship MV Ocean Gladiator. The ship recently completed its support to Operation Deep Freeze 2025 by conducting a cargo offload of 153 containers of retrograde materials including station waste and recyclables returned from Antarctica, and delivered ice-core samples from Antarctica that will be shared with scientists for further study in Port Hueneme, Calif. The offload marked the completion of MSC’s participation in the annual resupply mission to McMurdo Station, in support of the Joint Task Force Support for Antarctica mission to the National Science Foundation-managed U.S. Antarctic Program.

USNS Robert E. Simanek (T-ESB 7) arrives at Naval Station Norfolk May 5, 2025. The ship was named after Private First-Class Robert Ernest Simanek, who was awarded the Medal of Honor for shielding fellow Marines from a grenade at the Battle of Bunker Hill during the Korean War.
